Already planning to retire Feb. 1, 2018, Tompkins County Administrator Joe Mareane will be leaving his position earlier than that.

Last week, Legislature Chairperson Michael Lane announced that Mareane would be taking a medical leave from the county – which began Monday, November 13 – and will accelerate his retirement date. In the announcement, it noted that in an effort to focus on his recovery, Mareane informed Lane he would retire at the end of this month, November 30.

Mareane has been Tompkins County administrator since leaving his post as Onondaga County’s Chief Fiscal Officer in October 2008.

Taking the reins will be Deputy County Administrator Paula Younger, who will serve in an interim capacity pending the selection of Mareane’s replacement. The search process for the position is already well underway. Younger has been the county’s deputy administrator for the past 11 years.
