A smart look at local teams

Posted

Welcome to the very first edition of “What caught my eye”! With every passing week of the sports season, headlines are made and stories are written. With his eyes on the local sports scene, ESPN Ithaca’s Mark Shelley brings you the headlines that caught his attention from the previous week. This week Shelley kept his eye on East Hill and the happenings of the Big Red.

Cornell Wrestling drops a 19-16 showdown with rival Lehigh
The seventh ranked Big Red looked favored entering this past weekend against the Lehigh Mountain Hawks, having much of its starting lineup finally healthy. With a few returners to the Mountain Hawks lineup for Saturday’s dual meet, the two teams looked a little more even. With a close match, the Big Red was clawing its way out of a 13-0 deficit to start the meet and needed to secure bonus points in the second half of the contest.

With a lineup of talented lighter weights, the Big Red looked to be able to position itself in the lead by the final bout of the afternoon. In key matches, Lehigh held the Big Red without bonus points, allowing for the Mountain Hawks to steal an upset victory at home.

Looking ahead for the Big Red, Columbia and Sacred Heart are slated for this weekend and should provide chances for bonus points and a pair of team victories.
