By The People: Street Art

Posted

Street Art in Tompkins County has become accepted and has proliferated during the last decade. Artists once had a long process of gaining permission and waiting as long as 2 years to paint a wall. Now grants and partnerships invite artists, fund their supplies, and support their work. This appreciation has beautified our public spaces, bringing into our consciousness such themes as heritage, nature and literary characters.  International artists have joined local artists to create pieces that link us to cities in France, Colombia, Switzerland, for example. Street Art has become a Folk Art, done by the people, for the people, and in common areas that belong to all of the people. This is why when I look at the public art that can be found all across the City of Ithaca I see acceptance.
