Recently on ESPN Ithaca’s Between the Lines, host Tim Donnelly spoke with Lansing High School Baseball Senior Lansing Miller. Miller recently pitched a complete game to help put his team in the Section IV Class C Baseball Championship. Here is a snippet of that conversation; to hear the full interview, visit ESPN Ithaca’s on-demand PodCenter at ESPNIthaca.com.

Tim Donnelly: You won on a mercy rule against Elmira-Notre Dame, you were the pitcher for the Lansing Bobcats. How much does it help on the mound when you have that kind of run support, and it’s not a 1-run game, you have some breathing room?

Lansing Miller: You know, it really helps a lot. I had a little tough first inning, unearned run, but you know, it was going into the bottom of the first. I was able to get on, steal second, get moved over to third, and then Garrett Bell had a great bunt that moved me in to score to tie it 1-1 and the confidence helps a lot. It helps me, you know, if I can get the first strike in there with a lead, it helps me allow myself to throw the curve ball and any other off speed and be able to pitch with a lead.

TD: You brought up a sequence that I want to talk about, you go down 1-0 early, and then you have a lot to do with getting that run back in the bottom half of that first inning, as far as getting on base, stealing a base, coming around to score on that bunt. Is that something that means a little bit more to you when you are on the mound, helping your own cause and getting yourself back to even?

LM: Yea, it definitely helps. Being able to get on base and score that run really changes the whole game for me. It gives me a little boost of confidence that pushes me forward into later in the game. My confidence seems to build as the game goes on, and getting that run is huge. Actually, in the top of the first, Trey McDonald made that play at shortstop that actually deflected off my glove and he threw on to first when there was a runner on third and that could have been two nothing and that could have been a completely different game for us. So, that play was huge for us. Confidence is the big thing.
