Lansing at Large: Library plans crafty fall

The Lansing Community Library is planning a “crafty” fall schedule, beginning with fiber arts program for middle schoolers and featuring the annual artisan crafts fair.

The “Fall Fiber Arts Program” will be a five-week exploration of the field held after school for middle schoolers from Nov. 26 through Dec. 20. Projects will include coiled bowls, woven wall hangings, knotted jar luminaries, and string art.

The classes will be held from 2:45 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays on Nov. 26, and Dec. 3, 10, and 17, finishing up on Thursday, Dec. 20. Students will be allowed to take a bus from the middle school to the library with permission from their parents and after notifying the school office.

Registration is required and opens today. Call 533 4939 or e-mail katies@lansinglibrary.org to reserve a spot.

The library’s Tenth Annual Artisan Fair will be held Dec. 7 from 3 to 6 p.m. and Dec. 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the library and community center.

The event is free and open to the public and includes free beverages and treats for shoppers.

This year’s event will feature more than 25 artisans offering baked sweet treats, jewelry, clothing and accessories, woodworking, pottery, artwork and more. The Friends of the Lansing Library will also be raffling two gift baskets filled with donated goodies from the Artisans.

College Prep
The library will host a session on “How To Find A College Fit Without Breaking The Bank” on Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m.

Dr. Lucia Tyler, of Tyler Admissions Consulting, has been advising students and their families for over 10 years. She will discuss: what colleges are looking for in students; how to make the most out of college visits in order to find a good fit; how to avoid costly mistakes; and strategies for making college more affordable.

More Than Books
The library has several new “non-book” ways patrons can access materials: “OverDrive” provides access to downloadable audiobooks, eBooks, and music to your computer or portable device.

“Tumble Books Library” is an online collection of animated talking books, and includes puzzles, games, and quizzes in English, French, and Spanish on the library’s computers or at home.

“Hoopla” has free streaming movies, television shows, and music through an app for Android or IOS devices via your library card. Media is also available for temporary download to smartphones, tablets, or computers. Videos are available for three days; music for a week; and audiobooks for three weeks. Items are returned automatically so there can be no late fees.

“RB digital” allows users to read current and past issues of popular magazines on their computer or on their smart devices via an available app.

The library owns three Nook and two Kindle eReaders available for checkout just like a book.

Finally, puzzlers can check out jigsaw and other items from the collections. The puzzles can be browsed on the ground floor near the non-fiction room.
Regular events at the library include:T’ai Chi classes with instructor John Burger on Tuesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and Thursdays from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Participants should wear loose, comfortable clothing. The class is free and open to the public, although the suggested donation is $5.

Preschool Story Time is every Tuesday at 1 p.m. and Toddler Story Time is every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. Kids join Miss Katie and other guest readers in our large community room for stories, songs, crafts, and general silliness.
More generally, the library has passes to the Museum of the Earth and Cayuga Nature Center that can be “checked out” by patrons for one week.

Finally, the library will close early at 5 p.m. on Nov. 21 and will be closed Nov. 22 and 23 for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Free Skiing for Third and Fourth Graders
The “I Ski NY” program offers free skiing to third and fourth graders at participating ski resorts with an adult purchase.
