The American Flag: The stripes represent the original 13 Colonies and the stars represent the 50 states of the Union. The colors of the flag are symbolic as well; red symbolizes hardiness and valor, white symbolizes purity and innocence, and blue represents vigilance, perseverance and justice.
Nearly 3,000 people perished in the 9/11 disaster. Millions of shocked angry folks throughout the country displayed their flags in sympathy for those who lost their lives, a symbol of unity and strength and solidarity. Flags proudly flew throughout Ithaca and Tompkins County.
Today there are few flags flying anywhere in Tompkins County. Even our elected officials fail to display their flags. Voter turnout over the years has been at historic lows. Ithaca’s Democrat-led leadership certainly has to be questioned as does Cornell’s break-neck growth initiatives. Impact on our local economy is somewhat dubious. We elect our officials to lead and to set examples for good government. The flag represents these values and should be proudly displayed on every single household, both public and private. The flag is but a symbol, a statement that we are united and proud of the place where we live and work, proud to be an American.
Stand up for your flag and show your Colors!
