What Caught My Eye: Playoff parties and spring swings!

Newfield pulls the upset
Newfield Boy’s Basketball topped Spencer Van Etten for the second time in as many weeks. While the IAC Small School South tiebreaker was easily controlled by Newfield, the rematch was another thriller on a day that saw a number of close games in Section IV play. No matter what the Trojans are up against, it seems like Chris Bubble always has his team firing on all cylinders.

Mission accomplished…for now
Cornell Women’s Hockey didn’t need the kind of help that is only reserved for a Buffalo Bills team that wants to sneak into the postseason, but the team did need help from Clarkson this past weekend. Friday night’s Clarkson win over Princeton meant that the Big Red needed to simply win a pair of games over two teams that had poor showings at Lynah Rink last month in Rensselaer and Union to capture the ECAC regular-season crown. Spoiler alert, Cornell did their part and will now host the conference tournament early next month.

Baseball is back!
Spring training got underway this past weekend, and if you aren’t excited about the Yankees regular season baseball starting in late March, are you sure you’re a baseball fan? It’s only a few weeks of wintery weather between all of us and, as I say the first day of spring, Opening Day. The quest for another World Series is already underway. I just hope that the Yankees bring back some of that warm weather to New York.

The last week and a half has been, well to put it simply, a calamity for sports’ overall image. With shoe blowouts, coaches in the headlines for unfortunate events and...Robert Kraft, we need a way to catch our breath.
