Rootwork Herbals is hosting a medicine making campout and fire cider celebration at the Jane Minor BIPOC Community Medicine Garden this weekend. The garden, located at 40 Burns Road in Brooktondale, has served as a place for Black, indigenous and people of color (BIPOC) individuals to connect with nature, community and themselves.

The campout, which is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 25 from 2 p.m. until morning, will feature fall medicine making, local seasonal dinner, fire, smores, camping, a hot tub and night sky gazing. Everyone will also get to take home the plant medicine that they made.

The fire cider celebration, scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 26 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., will feature community fire cider making, workshops, open apothecary, tea, snacks, fire and friends. All ingredients and supplies will be provided, and ingredient donations and volunteer help are also welcomed. Everyone will get to take home a jar of fire cider that they make.

“As fall takes hold and fascism so desperately attempts to take hold, we must remember how to prepare for the cold and dark times to come,” a release announcing the events stated. “We will celebrate the fall by enjoying this precious life together and remembering why we resist. We will appreciate the abundance of food and medicine that the land still so sweetly provides, we will dig roots, build relationships, drink tea, offer care, strategize safety, play games and make fire cider to keep us warm and well through the winter. We will tap into the collective light of community that burns through all forms of ice and carries us through until the season of growth is here again.”

Both events are free and open to the public. A link to register for the events can be found on its website, rootworkherbals.com.
