Trumanburg’s first annual Earth Day was such a success that the event is returning.

Community members are invited to participate in a trash pickup event throughout the Trumansburg area and then enjoy Earth Care Day, celebrating with food, music and Earth Day education.

The event will be held Saturday, April 22, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. A rain date has been scheduled for April 29.

“This is all being done with a small team of volunteers – no sponsors, but perhaps that’s something we’ll look at for next year,” said Cait Darfler, lead organizer of the event.

Darfler is the chair of the Tompkins County Environmental Management Council and a member of the Ulysses Conservation and Sustainability Advisory Committee.

The event is open to those looking to help.

“For volunteering efforts to help at the Earthcare piece of the event, there will be a yard sign painting activity to help support pollinators. This would be a great place for volunteers to help kids make a sign to help feed the bees,” said Darfler.

There are other ways Trumansburg residents can help, too.

“Otherwise, for the community, we need hands (and feet) to cover the streets of the Trumansburg area to pick up trash,” she said. “Especially in ditches and at the edges of fields where the wind blows lots of trash.”

Participants will meet in the Trumansburg Farmers Market and DPW parking lot at Corey Street.

Gloves, grabbers, bags and vests will be provided.

Collected trash can be returned to the Farmers Market area, and then participants can join Earthcare Day, where there will be an opportunity to sit in a variety of electric vehicles and talk to EV owners. There will also be a chance to learn about waste reduction, composting, home energy upgrades, induction cooking, Arbor Day and supporting pollinators. Attendees can paint or take a yard sign in support of No-Mow or Low-Mow May.

The Luna food truck will be on site for lunch, using reusable dishes, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Music will be provided by Lloyd and Valerie Graves, Paul Martin and Rosie Newton.
