A Decision Bigger than Land
We have a decision to make. Do we want to invest in developing dynamic youth, or do we want to kick that can down the road another ten years? If we choose the latter, we may save ourselves the minor inconveniences that come with land development, but we will be complicit in supporting increases in childhood obesity, depression, anxiety, and attention deficit disorders. Our community is not immune from the national trends that are pushing our kids into a state of physical and emotional paralysis and it’s time we got serious about taking this issue head on.
On December 6th, Town of Ulysses residents will vote on whether or not to use federally issued relief funds to purchase a 30-acre parcel of land for sports fields and recreation. This purchase would be a significant step in addressing the crisis of stagnation and solitude crippling our youth. Of course, children alone are not the victims of a society dominated by screens and technology, adults too, are in desperate need of the benefits that come with exercise and team sports.
We’re not talking about welcoming a stadium complex, rather simply opening our arms to playing fields that can offer opportunities to kids who are desperate for organized activities that provide an outlet for their energy, while building invaluable skills such as collaboration, resilience, and discipline. For many, practices and games are an escape from the harsh realities of homelife. Their team is the family that loves them and their athletic achievement builds confidence and purpose that otherwise wouldn’t exist. At present, field shortages make these experiences increasingly scarce.
If you have a Ulysses mailing address you most likely received a pamphlet urging you to vote against this land purchase. While I believe this leaflet was more propaganda than periodical, I can appreciate neighboring properties fearing disruption in their historically quiet and tranquil backyards. However, I don’t imagine there will be many disturbances, certainly none that compete with the disturbing trends we’re witnessing with regards to the physical and mental health of our youth.
I’m voting “yes” on December 6th. I’m not voting “yes” on a proposed development, because there is none. I’m voting “yes” because we have a decision to make about the health of our Town and while I love football, I’m not interested in punting this issue to the next generation. We cannot let perfection be the enemy of progress. Our kids can’t afford that. Our COMMUNITY can’t afford that.
