The Downtown Ithaca Alliance (DIA) is proud to announce the promotion of Corrie Root to the position of Chief Operating Officer.

Root’s appointment comes as a recognition of her exceptional leadership, deep commitment to the community, and outstanding contributions to DIA’s mission to ensure that Downtown is a safe, clean and welcoming place for all.

Root brings over two decades of experience in nonprofit leadership, community engagement, and organizational development. Prior to joining DIA, she dedicated 17 years to the YMCA of Ithaca and Tompkins County, serving in a variety of roles including Marketing and Communications Director, Membership Director, and Branding Ambassador. She also spent three years with the Tompkins County Department of Social Services, further deepening her understanding of community needs and systems.

“Root has been an integral part of our leadership team,” said Nan Rohrer, Chief Executive Officer of the Downtown Ithaca Alliance. “Her ability to combine vision with operational expertise, along with her unwavering dedication to community-focused work, makes her the ideal person to lead our internal operations during this next chapter. With Root overseeing the day-to-day functions of the organization, I’m able to focus more fully on strategic growth, external partnerships, and long-term planning—essential functions of the CEO role.”

Root, a lifelong Tompkins County resident who grew up in Newfield and has worked in Ithaca her entire career, is known for her collaborative approach, commitment to mission-driven work, and ability to develop strong relationships with staff, partners, and stakeholders. She has played a key role in strengthening DIA’s internal systems, improving financial processes, and implementing key initiatives that support the organization’s mission to promote and revitalize Downtown Ithaca.

“I am honored and excited to continue serving the DIA in this expanded role,” said Root. “Downtown Ithaca is a vibrant, dynamic place, and I’m passionate about supporting the people, businesses, and organizations that make our community thrive.”
