Community invited to share immigration stories at Komonz Grill in Ithaca
Komonz Grill immigration stories open mic invites the community to share and reflect on family immigration experiences on Oct. 28.

Community members are invited to share stories about their family’s immigration background at the Immigrant Stories Open Mic at Komonz Grill on the Ithaca Commons.
Everyone has a story about where they — or their family — came from. On National Immigrants Day, the community is invited to gather for Immigrant Stories Open Mic, an evening of storytelling, reflection and connection. It is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 28 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Komonz Grill, located at 146 E. State St. on the Ithaca Commons.
Thousands of people in Tompkins County came here from other countries, and if we look back far enough, every one of us has an immigrant story. This special open mic invites participants to share their own story — or simply to listen — and appreciate the courage, resilience and hope that define the immigrant experience.
National Immigrants Day is a celebration first proclaimed by President Ronald Reagan in 1987 to honor the contributions of immigrants to the United States. The day coincides with the anniversary of the Statue of Liberty’s unveiling and recognizes the nation’s long history of welcoming people from around the world.
“Through this event, we want people to feel connected by our shared backgrounds as immigrants — whether first-generation or many generations back,” said Saoirse McClory, one of the organizers. “Our stories remind us of what we have in common.”
Admission is free and no registration is required. Stories may be up to five minutes long. To spark inspiration, participants might reflect on prompts such as:
- What surprised you when you came to the United States or Ithaca?
- Who or what gave you or your family courage along the way?
- What stories have you heard about a family member’s move to this country?
Immigrant Stories Open Mic is hosted by Story House Ithaca, Catholic Charities Tompkins/Tioga and the local Immigrant Solidarity Group. Food will be available for purchase from Komonz Grill. A hat will be passed to raise funds for legal aid and bail for immigrants facing deportation.
