Letters: Steberger an essential asset
I am so grateful that Reed is running for Tompkins County Legislature District Four. As a gender non-conforming person myself and long-time community member, having this local representation would benefit not just other folks like us, but the community as a whole. Reed has an uncanny ability to see people as they are, and respects a wide variety of experiences. This is an essential asset in our community, especially during our current tumultuous political climate.
I first met Reed working downtown and they were instrumental in connecting me with the larger community at a time when I felt isolated. At organizing meetings for local climate and political efforts we always started with pronouns as part of our introductions. Without this space I would never have been able to claim my identity and full personhood. I’ve witnessed the way Reed is able to bring all different types of people together in meaningful and powerful ways. I know Reed will be a valuable addition to the legislature and I’m so excited to vote for them on Tuesday, September 12th.
One of my favorite parts of Reed’s campaign has been the emphasis on ground-up democracy, as they have worked to build a platform that reflects the values of community members – a goal achieved by knocking on every door in District 4. As a resident of the district, neighbors have come up to me inspired by the style of Reed’s campaign. This is the type of politics our community needs. If the campaign alone has created community connections, I’m thrilled to see what’s next.
