With spring comes flowers blooming, birds chirping and Ulysses Philomathic Library’s spring book sale.

Volunteers have been busy sorting and organizing book donations from community members to prepare for the sale, which serves as a fundraiser for the library.

According to Rob Montana, a Ulysses Philomathic Library trustee, the library typically raises roughly $4,000 from each sale.

The upcoming spring book sale starts the evening of April 26 from 5 – 7 p.m., exclusively for members. The sale is then open for school visits and the public on April 27 and 28 from 8:30 a.m.- 5 p.m., April 29 from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. and April 30 from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m.

The last two days of the event are “name your price day.”

Although only members who have donated money will be invited to the book sale’s opening night, anyone can become a member that evening by making a donation to support the library.

The book sale has proved to be a resilient event, and its return to the indoors this past fall demonstrated the enthusiasm of attendees.

“Like everyone else, the library had to adapt its events during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, which included the book sale taking place outdoors under tents, and the fall sale was the first one in a while that was indoors,” Montana said. “It was great to hear people’s excitement as they perused the selections on the shelves in the Melvin Room, and especially kids – and their parents – who were able to experience the magic of the children’s room once again.”

Montana expressed gratitude to the many volunteers who have worked tirelessly to prepare for the upcoming spring book sale, whether they have been sorting books, have dedicated time to help set up and take down the event or will greet and assist shoppers.

“They are the reason this wonderful community event can happen twice a year,” Montana said. “While we do raise money to support the library’s operation, we really see the book sale as a community event, where friends and neighbors gather and socialize just as much as they are finding hidden gems. It’s really fun to see the kids roaming the grounds, getting an opportunity to visit the library and finding their own new favorites in the children’s room.”

Ulysses Philomathic Library will resume accepting book donations June 15.

“If you’re a regular library patron, someone who hasn’t visited in a while or hasn’t been inside before, our book sale is a great time to swing by and see what’s going on,” Montana said.
