Short’s Barber Shop moving into old post office

Short’s Barber Shop, currently located at 27 W. Main St., will soon be moving to a new location at 12 Elm St. in the old post office building.

The old post office building has been home to several businesses since the post office moved to its current location sometime in the early to mid 1990s, including the Post Office Café, Vine Floral Designs and storage for CNY Attractions. Short’s will share the divided space with Lowe’s Soft Water Service.

Sarah Short, owner of the shop, notes her desire to create a space with an old-time barber-shop feel, where customers can relax with a cup of coffee and conversation, get a haircut and not feel rushed because there is a lack of space

“Everything is brand new in the shop,” Short said. “All the walls and floors are brand new, and everything is going to be fresh and really nice. I’m so excited to be in a fresh, new space.”

Short said the larger size of the new space will allow more room to move and a relaxing atmosphere for her business.

“With a bigger space, I really want to get back to what the barber shop institution originally was, where it was a place to come in and hang out and be more a part of a community and not just a business,” she said.

In addition to creating this new spacious atmosphere for adults, Short hopes to purchase a pool table where adults and teens alike can play some free pool and contribute to her barber shop community.

Short has been in her current location on Main Street for the last seven years, taking over from Tim Germond, who ran the shop for what seems like forever. Short, who resides in Candor, commutes to the Trumansburg community Wednesday through Saturday to serve her very loyal customers.

“I heard through the grapevine that Tim was going to retire, so I made phone calls,” Short said. “I came out here because it was an opportunity, a smart business decision. I love coming out here and being part of the community. This is a business, but I also want it to have more of a community feel where people feel like they can just stop in, hang out, have a cup of coffee or whatever.”

Short, with her caring and friendly disposition and quick smile, is truly a staple in the Trumansburg community.

Short will close her doors the last week in February to make the move to the new space. She will reopen on March 4, with a grand reopening party on March 7 from 7:00 a.m. to noon. Short not only serves men but also women and children. Her hours are Wednesday and Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday 7:00 a.m. to noon.
