Tompkins Treasure Hunt coming Sept. 6

The History Center in Tompkins County is announcing the launch of the Tompkins Treasure Hunt, a community-wide puzzle adventure kicking off on Sept. 6.

Participants will embark on a journey through Tompkins County, following a trail of puzzles that lead from one historic location to the next. Each solution unlocks the next clue, bringing you closer to uncovering the ultimate prize: $10,000 worth of jewels donated by The Jewelbox.

Whether you’re a lifelong local, a puzzle enthusiast, or just looking for a fun way to explore the county, this is your chance to take part in a one-of-a-kind experience that blends history, mystery, and community spirit. If you’re a fan of escape rooms, or have always wanted to try one, this is your chance to take that same puzzling adventurous fun into the wild and across the map!

How It Works:

Step 1: Register to participate at www.thehistorycenter.net/tompkins-treasure. Register once, no matter the size of your group. Search alone, with family, or join with friends!

Step 2: On Sept. 6 at noon, you’ll receive your first puzzle online or in-person (more information to come about a Kick-off on Sept. 6). Puzzles are based on publicly available information surrounding local history and culture. If you know a little bit of lore, and you like a little bit of research, this hunt is for you.

Step 3: Solve each puzzle to discover the next location. Stuck? There are three clues available for each puzzle. At each hidden location, you’ll find a QR code that unlocks the next puzzle.

Step 4: Continue until you unlock the final destination—and the treasure! All participants that complete the hunt will receive a commemorative token.
