Trumansburg Fire Department golf tournament looks for sponsors

Matt Muraca, a local resident, is planning an upcoming golf tournament to raise money for the Trumansburg Fire Department, the first fundraiser of its kind.

The golf tournament is scheduled for Sept. 16, and all proceeds will go to the Trumansburg Fire Company.

Muraca’s wife, Bethany, is helping him organize the event, which they hope will be a success.

As they plan the golf outing, Matt is looking to attract local businesses and community members to sponsor the golf tournament.

“We’re looking for local businesses to sponsor a hole or sponsor part of the event – or just donate,” he said.

Matt is one of the assistant chiefs of the Trumansburg Fire Co., a nonprofit that supplies the labor for the Trumansburg Fire Department.

“It’s fun,” said Matt of his position. “You get to do all kinds of stuff. We get involved in all kinds of rescues with the terrain of Taughannock.”

He explained that the team gets involved in rope, swift-water and ice-water rescues.

“It’s a really fun department because there’s so many different aspects of firefighting that we’re involved in,” said Matt. “You never really know what to expect.”

Matt, an avid golfer, has played the sport since high school. He hopes to see many teams at the event for a fun-filled day.

“Hopefully [people will] make it a well-attended event so we can have it every year and then make it an annual event,” said Matt.

He explained that the fire department is looking to get a new electronic sign for the front of its building.

“We have an old sign that you have to put all the plastic letters on,” he said. “So, it’s kind of intense to put information out there to the community of events and training we’re doing. It makes it cumbersome to do that, but we’ve had to do it for the last 20 to 30 years. So, we want to raise some funds to try to start building towards getting an electronic sign.”

He says an electronic sign will not only look better, but it will enable the department to share information with the community more easily, such as fire prevention week in October and other events. EMS will also get good use out of an updated sign, as they can share upcoming training sessions with the community, such as CRP and other helpful programs.
