Health Department Reports Two COVID-19 Deaths of Fully Vaccinated Tompkins County Residents

The Tompkins County Health Department is reporting two COVID-19 related deaths of Tompkins County residents that occurred on September 13. TCHD has confirmed that both patients who passed away at Cayuga Medical Center were fully vaccinated for COVID-19 and that both were elders.  

Health Department Reports COVID-19 Death of a Fully Vaccinated Tompkins County Resident

The Tompkins County Health Department was notified by Cayuga Medical Center of the death of a fully vaccinated Tompkins County resident attributed to COVID-19. The patient, who passed away at Cayuga Medical Center on September 11, 2021 was 93 years old. This is the first COVID-19 death of a fully vaccinated Tompkins County resident. 

Guidance For Fully Vaccinated Individuals Exposed to a Positive Case

The Tompkins County Health Department is alerting the community to updated guidance used during contact tracing following a positive COVID-19 case. New guidance includes that fully vaccinated individuals who are exposed to a positive case but are asymptomatic do not need to quarantine, but instead should monitor themselves for symptoms and get tested 3-5 days after the exposure. Fully vaccinated individuals exposed to a positive case should avoid contact when possible with those who are unvaccinated or immunocompromised. TCHD continues to complete case investigations and contact tracing for each positive COVID-19 case. 

Statement on Increase in Positive COVID-19 Cases

TCHD is announcing 130 new positive COVID-19 cases. Of the 361 new positive cases over the past 7 days, a significant portion are related to arrival and surveillance testing as colleges resume operations for the fall semester. All confirmed positive cases are in isolation and contact tracing is ongoing.

Local Delta Variant Information

The Tompkins County Health Department is publishing data on the increased prevalence of the COVID-19 Delta variant. The Delta variant contains mutations that make the coronavirus spread more easily, even in fully vaccinated individuals. The Delta variant has become the predominant variant both locally and across the country.

The Tompkins County Health Department is providing some clarification in regards to its recent advisory for vaccinated individuals to wear masks indoors when around others.

The Tompkins County Health Department reported 15 new positive COVID-19 cases today, bringing the total number of new positive cases over the past seven days to 59. This rise in cases is primarily attributed to several clusters related to large indoor gatherings and domestic travel. Out of an abundance of caution, TCHD is issuing a Health Advisory encouraging all residents, regardless of vaccination status, to wear a mask while indoors around others.

The Tompkins County Health Department is reporting 31 total new positive COVID-19 cases over the past seven days and 27 active cases today. This report follows a recent shift from daily to weekly reporting of data in TCHD’s data table. This uptick in local cases follows statewide and national trends and is predominantly attributed to clusters related to domestic travel and large gatherings.   

Resuming Daily COVID-19 Data Table Updates, August 2nd

Beginning Monday, Aug. 2, the Tompkins County Health Department (TCHD) will resume daily COVID-19 data posting through the table on the department’s website and social media. The table reporting had shifted from daily to weekly earlier in July as active cases had remained low for multiple weeks. COVID-19 data continued to be updated daily on a linked spreadsheet available to the public.

TCHD and Cayuga Health System will hold a clinic for everyone who is 18 years old or older at the Mall Site, and a small pop-up clinic for Newfield residents in the Village of Newfield on Thursday, April 29.

The Tompkins County Health Department (TCHD) is announcing a pop-up COVID-19 vaccination clinic to be held at Lehman Alternative Community School (LACS) on Ithaca’s West Hill this Saturday, April 10.

COVID-19 Vaccine Update: 2,800 Doses Allocated, Eligibility Expands to Everyone over 16 Years of Age

Tompkins County received an initial allocation of 2,200 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine for the week of April 5, with 600 additional doses subsequently allocated by the regional vaccination hub. 2,500 doses are being made available to all eligible individuals and appointment links have been sent through the Tompkins County COVID-19 Vaccine Registry. 100 doses of Johnson & Johnson vaccine are designated for homebound individuals,  marginalized populations. 200 doses are being made available through a previously announced pop-up clinic at Lehman Alternative Community School on West Hill in Ithaca.

Tompkins County received an allocation of 2,770 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine for the week of March 29. All 2,770 doses are designated for individuals who meet the eligibility guidelines as they were on March 29, including individuals aged 50 and over. The Tompkins County Health Department (TCHD) will use the COVID-19 vaccine registry to communicate appointment links directly with a random selection of eligible individuals.

Recent Increase in COVID-19 Cases, Reporting Variants of Concern in Tompkins County

The Tompkins County Health Department (TCHD) is alerting residents to an increased number of positive COVID-19 cases in the County. As of March 22, TCHD is reporting 150 active COVID-19 cases in Tompkins County, up from a low of 76 active cases on March 2. TCHD is reporting that a majority of the increase in cases result from social gatherings and travel. TCHD is also reporting a number of COVID-19 variants that have been sequenced and are included in the total active case numbers.

The Tompkins County Health Department (TCHD) is clarifying recent guidance from New York State and the CDC related to individuals vaccinated against COVID-19. As vaccinations increase, health officials have begun to expand the guidance regarding travel and gatherings for fully vaccinated individuals.

Tompkins County received an allocation of 1,970 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine for the week of March 15. 1,170 doses are designated for individuals with comorbidities and 800 doses are designated for phase 1a and 1b essential workers. The Tompkins County Health Department (TCHD) has used the COVID-19 vaccine registry to communicate appointment links directly with a random selection of eligible individuals from the registry.

Tompkins County received an additional allocation of 1,170 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine on March 12, and will be prioritizing those doses for individuals with comorbidities. The Tompkins County Health Department (TCHD) will use the COVID-19 vaccine registry to communicate appointment links directly with a random selection of individuals from the registry with comorbidities.

COVID-19 Vaccine Update: Eligibility Expanded to Ages 60+, Additional Public-Facing Workers, TCHD Urges Residents to Sign Up for Registry

On March 9, New York State announced that eligibility for the COVID-19 vaccine has expanded to include all individuals aged 60+ starting on March 10, and the following essential workers starting on March 17: 

COVID-19 Vaccine Update: 1,170 Doses Allocated This Week, Prioritized for 1b Essential Workers, Comorbidities

Tompkins County received a total of 1,170 first doses of COVID-19 vaccine for the week of March 8. Of the 1,170 doses, 700 are designated for phase 1b essential workers and 470 for individuals with comorbidities. The doses for 1b essential workers will no longer be separated out by industry and will be offered to a random selection of individuals who have signed up for the Tompkins County COVID-19 Vaccine Registry. The Tompkins County Health Department (TCHD) also used the registry to communicate directly with individuals who have comorbidities. All available appointments have been communicated to eligible individuals and have been filled for this week.

Public Vaccine Appointment Link for 3/5/21 Clinic Available for 65+ Individuals

The Tompkins County Health Department is publishing a link for individuals aged 65 and over to register for a vaccine appointment on Friday, March 5 (tomorrow). If you are under 65 and register, you will be turned away at the vaccination site. TCHD has sent a link to all 65+ individuals on the Tompkins County COVID-19 Vaccine Registry, but a number of appointments remain available. Individuals on the registry have been encouraged to pay close attention to their email and phones for appointment announcements.

The Tompkins County Health Department is announcing that public-facing hotel workers and individuals who are homebound can now use the Tompkins County Vaccine Registry and are eligible to receive the vaccine locally. Individuals in these eligibility groups are encouraged to sign up for the registry and will be communicated with by TCHD when appointments become available.

COVID-19 Vaccine Update: 2,470 Doses Allocated This Week

Tompkins County received a total of 2,470 first doses of COVID-19 vaccine for the week of March 1. Of the 2,470 doses, 1,570 are designated for people aged 65 years and older and 300 are for individuals with comorbidities. TCHD is no longer prioritizing within the comorbidity group and those doses will be made available to the wider age group.  The remaining 600 doses are designated for workers in phase 1b and TCHD has prioritized P-12 school workers and in-person college instructors.

Cayuga Health announced today that it will resume its limited inpatient visitation policy due to the decrease of COVID-19 cases and declining hospitalizations within the community.

The Tompkins County Health Department is announcing three positive cases of the “UK variant” of COVID-19 identified in Tompkins County. One positive case was identified following travel and the other two cases were close household contacts of the first positive case. The contact investigation has been completed and all close contacts have been identified. The individual entered quarantine immediately upon returning from travel and close contacts were also quarantined. Following positive test results, all three individuals were placed in isolation.

Health Department Issues Correction Regarding Deaths Reported on 1/20

On January 20, the Health Department reported two deaths from Oak Hill Manor Nursing Home in error. The Health Department has confirmed that these deaths were not Oak Hill residents. The two deaths were residents of Beechtree Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing. There was a delay in the Health Department being notified of these deaths, which occurred on January 18.

Cayuga Nursing & Rehabilitation Center Opens Dedicated 37-Bed COVID-19 Patient Facility

In response to an increase in demand for acute bed care capacity in the Southern Tier and across the region, Cayuga Health [CH] and Cayuga Nursing & Rehabilitation Center [CRNC] officials announced today that they have teamed up to offer a 37-bed facility dedicated to COVID-19 patient care. The COVID-19 facility is located in a separate unoccupied building on the Cayuga Nursing & Rehabilitation Center campus and is staffed by a dedicated team. The facility specifically targets stabilized non-infectious COVID-19 patents which are still testing positive, to provide continued care and the required quarantine.

New York State did not allocate doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to the Tompkins County Health Department for the week of January 18, 2021. A limited number of doses are being delivered to local pharmacies; their booking processes are done directly through the pharmacies.

40,000 sq. ft. Mass Vaccination Clinic Opens in Ithaca

Cayuga Health (CH) officials announced today that they have been working closely with the Tompkins County Health Department to open a Covid-19 mass vaccination clinic. The 40,000 sq. ft. mass vaccination clinic is located in the former Sears department store at The Shops at Ithaca Mall. It has been opened for Phase 1 vaccination dispensing and in preparation for the progression of the vaccination distribution. So far, Cayuga Health has administered 5,132 vaccines, at approximately 650-800 per/day, as part of the Phase 1A and now 1B. With enough vaccines, the site is capable of administering 2,000 doses daily.
