Comic Book Club meeting on 1/20/2026 — “Cool Ads and Doo-dads!” 7-8pm, at the Tompkins County Public Library, in the Schwarz Jacobson Meeting Room

January 20 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Free

For the second meeting in the new year, the Comic Book Club of Ithaca will continue our survey of the weird and wonderful "lost world" of comic book ads! Yes, in addition to tales of super-heroes and funny animals, the comic books of the 1950s and '60s and into the 70s generally featured several pages of (often quite eccentric) classified ads. Readers could send away for "X-ray specs", log-cabin playhouses made of heavy-duty corrugated cardboard (not plastic!), and practical-joke items such as garlic-flavored chewing gum. Even more wonderfully, many of these ads were beautifully drawn by long-time comic book artists. Join in at the meeting on 1/20/2026 of the Comic Book Club of Ithaca, for another look at the days when "Sea Monkeys" ruled the waves!

The Comic Book Club of Ithaca — the oldest continuously running comic book club in the country — is a registered non-profit organization. The Club meets on the first and third Tuesdays of the month, and meetings are free and open to pop culture fans of all ages. For more information, see the Club's website at comicbookclub.org, which includes links to the Club's Facebook page, and to other events such as Ithacon, the annual comic book convention.

If you like to read — books, comics, graphic novels, on-line comics, you name it — check us out!
