Launched in 1948, in Japanese comic books, Astro Boy became one of the most successful fictional characters ever. Created by writer-artist Osamu Tezuka, Astro Boy made the leap to animation in 1963, in Japan and in the United States, becoming the first anime series widely distributed in the U.S. The re-boot in 1980 of the animated series provides a wonderful glimpse into the evolution of anime styles, even as it fills in a lot of interesting details to the origin story. Join in at the meeting on Tuesday, 10/21/2025, of the Comic Book Club of Ithaca, where we will continue to check out the 1980s re-imagining of this pioneering, iconic character!
The Comic Book Club of Ithaca — the oldest continuously running comic book club in the country — is a registered non-profit organization. The Club meets on the first and third Tuesdays of the month, and meetings are free and open to pop culture fans of all ages. For more information, see the Club's website at comicbookclub.org, which includes links to the Club's Facebook page, and to other events such as ITHACON, the local, annual comic book convention.
