"They're creepy and they're kooky, mysterious and spooky …. the Addams Family!" And they all sprang from the mind and the pen of artist Charles Addams, who created these characters decades ago in single-panel cartoons. At the meeting on November 4, 2025, of the Comic Book Club of Ithaca, we will take a look at the roots of the family we know and love as the "Addams Family!"
Morticia and Gomez, their daughter Wednesday and their son Pugsley, the butler Lurch, and other characters featured in the Addams Family movies, on the classic 1960s TV show, and most recently, on the Netflix series Wednesday, all were inspired by the wonderfully strange work of artist Charles Addams, who drew over 1,300 cartoons, mainly for New Yorker magazine, during his long career. The Addams Family did not appear fully formed on Day One, and they did not appear in most of his cartoons, but they were the regularly recurring characters in Addams's work, and they have become the most iconic of his many eerie creations. Whether you first encountered the Family last week on Netflix, or have been re-reading the cartoon collections for years, drop by the Comic Book Club meeting on 11/4 for a look at the Addams Family Tree!
The Comic Book Club of Ithaca — the oldest continuously running comic book club in the country — is a registered non-profit organization. The Club meets on the first and third Tuesdays of the month, and meetings are free and open to pop culture fans of all ages. For more information, see the Club's website at comicbookclub.org, which includes links to the Club's Facebook page, and to other events such as Ithacon, the annual comic book convention.
